Naworth Castle has been the home of the Dacre and Howard families for over 700 years. The castle is not a hotel, but the present owners, Philip and Elizabeth Howard, can make it available for exclusive overnight stays, for a minimum party size of 10 people.

The castle and its locality are steeped in history. In the thirteenth century, the Dacre family were particularly prominent in the reign of Henry III as Sheriffs of Cumberland and Yorkshire. Both Howards and Dacres were distinguished in many battles including the Battle of Flodden. Throughout history the family have held high offices in government. The first Earl of Carlisle, though a Royalist at heart, became a key commander during the Civil War whilst the third Earl is perhaps best remembered for building the magnificent Baroque palace, Castle Howard in Yorkshire.

The Howards are first among the great territorial families of England. They hold the premier dukedom (Norfolk) and the premier earldom (Arundel). The Howards of Naworth are descended from the forth Duke of Norfolk.

Naworth is a wonderful base from which to explore other historic sights and areas of outstanding natural beauty. Situated ten miles from the Scottish Border and 12 miles from the city of Carlisle, the English Lake District and Hadrian's Wall are within easy reach. The castle is within an hour's drive of the homes of William Wordsworth, Beatrix Potter and Sir Walter Scott.

Residential Tours
We welcome parties of 10-18 guests who can be comfortably accommodated in highly individual bedrooms in our Dacre, Morpeth and Lord William's towers and in the Courtyard rooms. Each has its own bathroom or shower room, of which seven are en-suite. In addition, we have outstanding retained caterers.

The Tariff (2002) for dinner, bed and full English breakfast is for an overnight stay. This rate includes a private tour of the castle, conducted by the owner, and an exclusive dinner hosted by Mr and Mrs Howard.
